How to Prevent Content Blindness

December 3, 2019Erhan Yilmaz

We are exposed to millions of pieces of information everyday. We see ads, watch media, read articles, and engage with hours of conversation from the moment we wake up until we call it a day. One of the biggest sources of information we are exposed to are content being shared online. The sea of information is so vast that we often disregard most and only look at those that really catch our attention. This is a phenomenon digital marketers call content blindness.

Because of content blindness, brands must challenge themselves to make sure all their content stands out and attracts customers. If your content isn’t getting enough clicks and shares, then the time and money spent on current digital marketing activities are all put to waste. Here are some tips to make your content get more attention and prevent content blindness.

Know Your Market by Heart

Time to go beyond your typical demographics by learning what interests your target market and what kind of content are actually useful to them. You can even go the extra mile and find out when are they online and what devices are they using. Just as in any marketing strategy, understanding your what your customers need and how they think, act, and behave allows you to develop content and strategies that are more effective in attracting your target market.

Have a Clear and Compelling Message

Your content should be brief but useful. First, communicate benefits and solutions which are important and helpful for your customers. The key to doing this successfully is being straight to the point. People tend to lose interest in content that takes more time. Second, don’t beat around the bush and make sure that your titles and headlines communicate this clearly. Using numbers, adjectives, why’s, and how’s in your title and headline are useful because they give the gist of what your content is about and how it can benefit your audience. Lastly, don’t be afraid to put in a subtle marketing hook every now and then for those who want more of your content.

Use Graphics to Tell Your Story

Like the old saying goes, a picture can say a thousand words. Using graphics gives you a greater chance of grabbing attention and can give your content more credibility. There are thousands of stock images online which you can use for a fee or for free. Some good sites to search free images on would be Pixabay, Flickr, Dreamstime, Shutterstock, and Image Source.

Another way to make your content stand out is using infographics. Readers find infographics easier to consume, and a well-designed infographic stands out in the crowd of content. If this isn’t your forte, then try some easy-to-use infographic tools, such as Infogram and Piktochart. If you have room in your budget, you can hire freelancers from sites like Elance and Freelancer.com to do the job for you.

Know the Perfect Timing

Timing counts for a lot when you want to make your content more visible. You can’t post content about spring cleaning when its summer and you will lose many opportunities if you don’t ride online trends relevant to your brand. Plan major content weeks or months before you intend to share them, but make sure that you’re always up-to-date with the daily trends.

Content blindness can be very challenging to overcome. However, understanding your audience, creating relevant and attractive content, and keeping timing in mind will help your brand become more visible to your audience.
